Five veterans from the American Legion Post 320 were honored Saturday during a Quilts of Valor presentation held at Mentor Town Hall in Humbird.
The presentation was led by Karen Demaree, Wisconsin State Coordinator for the North Central Region of the Quilts of Valor Foundation. The organization honors veterans who have served during times of war by presenting them with handmade quilts as a symbol of comfort, healing, and gratitude.
Veterans recognized during the ceremony included Odel Nelson, who served during the Vietnam War; Steven Aldach, a Gulf War veteran; Stephen Marasek, who served during the Korean Conflict; and Timothy Gile, a Cold War veteran. Jerry Parker, a Vietnam War veteran, was also honored but was unable to attend the ceremony.
Each quilt is a lifetime award and is handmade especially for the recipient. Quilts of Valor quilts cannot be bought or sold—they can only be earned through military service. Each quilt is made with three layers. The top layer, made of many shapes, colors, and patterns, represents all who have served in the military. The middle layer provides warmth and stands for comfort and healing. The back layer, stitched together with thousands of stitches, represents the strength of family and community coming together in support.
Family members, fellow veterans, and community members looked on as each quilt was displayed and then placed around the veterans’ shoulders, just as the foundation’s founder, Catherine Roberts, envisioned. “These quilts are meant to offer comfort and healing,” Demaree said. “We offer you our deepest gratitude for your service and sacrifice.”
Following the ceremony, members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 320 served a homemade meal in honor of the veterans. The dinner gave everyone a chance to visit, share stories, and personally thank the veterans for their service.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation has awarded over 400,000 of quilts nationwide, relying on volunteers and donors to continue honoring veterans—one quilt at a time.
